The Conference theme for this year is Drylands and Wetlands: connecting and managing heterogeneity across landscapes.  In line with this theme, the Indaba will largely be focusing on the uniqueness of dryland wetlands which are a common, widespread feature of the Northern Cape and other drier landscapes in South Africa. These are poorly understood systems which are often associated with variable spatio-temporal processes. This conference provides a unique opportunity for wetland practitioners to share their experiences with these systems and engage in discussions around the importance and conservation of these systems. Notwithstanding this focus, the Indaba will also cater for a wide diversity of other wetland types ensuring that wetland heterogeneity is captured through the three days of presentations and deliberations. In addition, other wetland related activities, social connections and governance/policy issues will form an important part of the Indaba.

Under this overarching theme members of wetland communities are invited to submit abstracts relating to their specific community of practice, whether it is education, academic, industry, conservation, agriculture, consulting or decision making.

The following sub-themes have been identified as being of interest for the submission of scientific posters and/or papers:

  • Wetlands in drylands
  • Wetlands, people and community engagement
  • Birds, biodiversity and wetlands
  • Rivers, wetlands and agriculture
  • Co-operative governance and multi-sector involvement
  • Wetland rehabilitation
  • Urban wetlands
  • Wetland monitoring and management

Student presentations are especially encouraged and limited funding is available for student attendance. Qualifying students will be able to download the application form on the registration page.
